Low waste slow fashion: The environmental benefits of couture
When I started out on my design journey, my first thought wasn’t about sustainability, but it’s something that has naturally become a part of my business over the years. I started out to make women feel good, to dress their bodies the way they should be dressed – with comfort and quality at the core of everything I do.
Each piece I make is carefully designed, made to exact measurements, and with longevity in mind, so when it comes to the lifecycle of a garment, my work is indeed ‘slow fashion’.
My couture is synonymous with durability and quality too, and no thread or detail is left unconsidered. I don’t make for the sake of making; each and every piece is thoughtfully designed, carefully cut, meticulously crafted and slowly constructed, stitch by stitch. My couture is designed for a long life of wear after wear, season after season, so there’s no questioning the value of it.
I also keep my offcuts, my scrap fabric, the unused trims, and all of my waste, I use them for embroidered details, delicate feature pieces on my dresses, or I work with local recyclers to repurpose them. Some of the fabrics are recycled into new yarns and given a new life in the garment cycle all over again too.
Sustainable fashion may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of couture, but to me, it is one and the same, and I am proud to be contributing to a better fashion future through the slow and considered work I do. If you’re yet to discover what sustainable couture is all about and just how good it feels, come and see me.
